RAISE A PUPPY FOR THE SEEING EYE
Give the gift of independence by raising a Seeing Eye puppy. The love and training you provide will help to enhance the life of a blind or visually impaired individual in the United States or Canada.
The Seeing Eye, the oldest dog guide school in North America, is in need of volunteer families to raise Seeing Eye puppies. These puppies, born into a special destiny, stay with volunteer families in New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware for about a year and a half. Families provide warm loving homes for their puppies, teach them basic obedience and expose them to a variety of social situations.
Kenneth Rosenthal, President of The Seeing Eye, says, "Puppy raising volunteers provide an invaluable service. A dog raised in a kennel doesn’t have the firm foundation of love and trust or the wide exposure to different daily stimuli like traffic, stores and people as does a dog raised by a nurturing family in a home. Without puppy raisers, we would not have the caliber of Seeing Eye dogs that our graduates enjoy today."
Seeing Eye representatives stay in close touch with the volunteers to help with the puppies’ care and handling. The Seeing Eye pays for all veterinary bills and provides a monthly allowance for food. After 18 months, the dogs return to The Seeing Eye to begin their formal training. At the end of a 4 month training period, each dog is matched with a blind person and this new tram trains together for 20-27 days.
For information on becoming a puppy raiser, call (973) 539-4425, ext. 769.
